Open Forum Budapest on 8-10 May 2009 organised by the Hungarian Europe Society and the Germany-based NGO Citizens of Europe focused on the mismatch between the role of the European Union as a “civilizatory” power in the Western Balkans and the public attention in most of the member states.
HES organised a study tour to Brussels for three university students - Zoltán Dóczi, Szabolcs Tóth and Szilvia Váradi together with István Hegedűs HES chairman between 15-19 April 2009 sponsored by the National Civil Fund.

On 21 January 2009, Gábor Iván state secretary of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, member of HES made a presentation on the preparations for the Hungarian Presidency in 2011.

D. candidate in political science at Boston University made a presentation entitled "The Accession Hangover - Czech Politics since May 2004", and Tim Haughton, senior lecturer in the politics of Central and Eastern Europe at Birmingham University spoke about "Changing Direction or Still on the Right Road? The Dynamics of Contemporary Slovak Politics" on 31 March 2008.
József Juhász, professor at the Institute of Eastern European History, Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences made a presentaton on Conflict Resolution on the Western Balkans on 13 March 2008.
Kornél Almássy, Member of the Hungarian Parliament, Hungarian Democratic Forum, Gergely Romsics, member of HES, research fellow at the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs and András B. Vágvölgyi, journalist talked about the US election campaign on 5 March 2008.
István Szent-Iványi, Member of the European Parliament (Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) made a presentation about the state of liberalism in Europe, the party political relations in the European Parliament, about the Lisbon Treaty, and the presidential elections in Serbia on 1st Febr.

The problem of a European identity is not that there isn't one, but that very broadly two can be defined - one political, the other cultural - and they are in many ways out of alignment. The result is that the process of European integration as currently understood appears to be reaching a limit and this will not change very markedly in quality unless this state of affairs is remedied.
