Diplomatic Assessment of the Semester

Gajus Scheltema, Ambassador of the Royal Netherlands Embassy to Hungary was the guest of HES on 24 May 2016. The discussion included the priorities elaborated by the Dutch Presidency of the EU Council as well as the challenges facing the European integration. The ambassador called the EU-Turkey agreement a break-through in the management of the migration crisis. He expressed his optimism about the EU membership of Great Britain considering the recent polls about the outcome of the referendum: the country will remain in the European Union.

A Toolkit About Human Rights

A toolkit about human rights was completed by the Foundation for Democratic Youth (DIA) for the request of the Hungarian Europe Society in the framework of the "Do We Have European Citizen Rights?" project in February 2016. Rita Galambos included the outcomes of the trainings in secondary schools supported by the project into the methodological description.

The Hungarian Europe Society held its traditional annual workshop and general electoral assembly on 3 January 2016. Firstly András Schweitzer gave a presentation entitled “Party competition and democracy: Has the left-right division become senseless (again)?” Following his speech, Dorka Horváth addressed the audience with her thoughts under the title: “Clicktivism”: online political movements”.

In the framework of the Citizen-rights project trainers of the Foundation for Democratic Youth in co-operation with the Hungarian Europe Society held sessions about democratic rights and responsibility for altogether hundred students of the Petrik Lajos Bilingual Secondary School, the Alternative Secondary School of Economics, the Városmajori Secondary School and the Politechnikum between November 2015 and January 2016.

HES held its traditional annual workshop this time at the beginning of the year, on 3 January 2015. Members of the Society held presentations: firstly, Tamás Fóti spoke about the subject of "Juncker's Programme: Set a Thief to Catch a Thief?", secondly Gergely Brückner talked about the most important actors and mechanisms of the Fidesz economic heartland, and about the politically driven world of the oligarchs in Hungary, finally György Petőcz elaborated the new waves of Hungarian anti-governmental demonstrations organised on Facebook.
